The Process

How Concrete Recycling Works

  1. Collect. Broken concrete from slabs, driveways, curbs and foundations is hauled in or dropped off.
  2. Sort. Dirt, wood and trash are kept out, and steel reinforcement is separated.
  3. Crush. The concrete is broken down into smaller pieces.
  4. Screen. The crushed material is sorted by size into usable products.
  5. Reuse. The recycled aggregate goes back to work as base and fill on new projects.

Why Recycled

Why Contractors Choose Recycled Aggregate

  • Keeps concrete out of landfills and puts it back to work
  • Often costs less than quarried stone for base and fill
  • Compacts well because crushed pieces are angular
  • Available locally from yards in Cuyahoga and Portage counties

Need fresh concrete for the same job? We also supply ready mix concrete from two plants.

FAQ

Concrete Recycling FAQ

What is recycled concrete aggregate?

Recycled concrete aggregate, often called RCA or crushed concrete, is old concrete from demolished slabs, driveways, curbs and foundations that has been crushed and screened into gravel-sized material. It is used much like quarried stone, most often as a compacted base.

What is recycled concrete used for?

Common uses include base and sub-base under driveways, parking lots, roads and slabs, general fill, and temporary construction entrances. Ask our office which recycled product fits your project.

Is recycled concrete as good as gravel for a base?

For compacted base work, crushed concrete performs well because its angular pieces lock together when compacted. For decorative or drainage uses, washed stone is usually the better choice, which is why we also carry triple-washed gravel at Portage Aggregate & Supply.

Can concrete with rebar be recycled?

Steel reinforcement is separated during crushing at most recycling operations, but rules vary by site. Call our office before you bring or send reinforced concrete so we can confirm what we can take.

Can you haul away my old concrete?

Yes. Northcoast Bulk Transfer handles transportation and disposal of old concrete, with dump trucks from 1 to 25 tons.

How much does concrete recycling cost?

Pricing depends on the amount of material, how clean it is and whether it needs to be hauled. Call 440-582-1100 or request a quote with your project details.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Cleveland and its suburbs, Summit County and Portage County from North Royalton, Twinsburg and Shalersville.
